Local Product: Savory Tomato Chutney

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not much of a cook. But when Santhoshi contacted me about her homemade tomato chutney, I knew I had to give it a shot. After we met, I knew I was holding on to a jar of the real deal. What could go wrong?

Nothing could. Because this stuff is delicious, and I’m convinced it would pair with absolutely everything.

Let’s back up a little. Santhoshi is the mother of two boys and has a passion for cooking. She teaches Indian cooking classes out of her home and, obviously, makes her own tomato chutney. The recipe has been passed down from her grandmother to her mother to her. After receiving super positive feedback from friends about the chutney, she decided to jar it and sell it to the public.

I know nothing about chutneys and had never cooked with one before, so I kept it simple for my first time cooking with the product. Santhoshi has a few recipes listed on her website, and I choose the easiest: Tomato Rice.

It was as easy as mixing 1 cup of cooked rice with 1/2 cup of the chutney, topping it with a hard boiled egg. Seriously, that’s it.

And it was amazing.

The tomato chutney has a great kick to it. I like spice but am somewhat of a spice wimp, but it was the perfect amount. I also have no idea how the egg paired so perfectly with the rice and tomato mixture, but trust me, it did.

This dish is extremely comforting and is something I could eat weekly. I’m so pumped to try the other recipes on Santhoshi’s website and also get a little creative on my own.

To purchase this delicious product, check out any of these retailers. Price may vary, but it’s sold in 12 oz. jars only.

If you cook with the chutney, be sure to let me know what you made. Big thanks to Santhoshi for introducing me to her flavorful creation!

  1. I use the tomato chutney like sauce over sautéed mushrooms and onions and then melt cheese over the whole thing….yum!!! (I have also been known to eat it by the spoonful right out of the jar 😉.)
